Mindfulness: An Introduction

Mindfulness can endow organisational employees with the resources required to deal with the demands placed on them at the workplace. In two studies, we find that mindfulness leads to superior performance and lower emotional exhaustion thereby contributing to workplace well-being and performance. - Singapore University

Staff are the backbone of any organisation.

Mindfulness-based training offers individuals concrete skills, tools, meditations and a perspective shift that can markedly increase a sense of life and work satisfaction, and hence productivity. Following training, participants report that they can uncover better solutions to issues, manage greater demands and workloads more skilfully, feel less distressed by context, and get on better with people in the workplace. Participants say (see testimonials) that after mindfulness-based training that they are more focused when at work, more present when at home, feel more settled and less anxious, and considerably happier at both home and work.

Mindfulness-based skills are about the present.

They offer powerful awareness and acceptance skills that serve to bring sharp clarity to situations. Our perceptions of ourselves, and thoughts like 'I am not good enough' and 'they should have done this differently' are softened. Coupled with awareness tools this tends to result in people seeing more choices and acting more constructively and wisely.

I have gone from 'burnout' to fired up! Whenever I can, I introduce ideas and practices of mindfulness to clients and colleagues alike, and enjoy seeing how such simple yet powerful ideas can be so effective. - Chris Ridley, Social Worker, Western Adelaide

How does Mindfulness assist staff?

Our training courses

are grounded in research from neuroscience, psychology, education, management, leadership, and the contemplative traditions. Focused on teaching new techniques to approach, perceive, feel and react to difficult thoughts and situations our courses are designed to assist organisational staff to access calmer, clearer, happier and more productive states, more often.

What is MBCT?

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

is a core training course in the state of the art set of tools which combine Mindfulness with Cognitive Therapy. Mindfulness is a simple yet sophisticated Buddhist form of meditation and has been used for over two and a half thousand years. Cognitive Therapy - also known as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or Behaviour Therapy - focuses on realising and changing the unhelpful ways we may think, interpret and react to situations. It has developed in the West since the 1960s. The combination brings together sensory and cognitive techniques within a framework of kindness, self-acceptance and being present, which almost paradoxically brings about a greater ability to either let things go, or, respond actively in ways consistent with what is important.

Focussed on the present, MBCT is approachable, and like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction from which it draws heavily, was developed in a Western context for meditators and non-meditators alike. MBCT is for those who want to live with more ease, skill and wisdom.

How is Mindfulness learnt?

Experiencing mindfulness

is the only way to learn mindfulness. Our research-based training courses teach powerful awareness and acceptance skills that change the way people think about and experience the quality of their life and relationships.  All of our modules are experiential in nature and incorporate elements of mindfulness meditation, theoretical models and discussion to varying degrees. Modules are designed for the learning to be incorporated into everyday work and life immediately.

The study of mindfulness has brought me personal peace, focus in my work and greater enjoyment of the present. I am also finding it easier to use improved self awareness to influence wiser decision making...I have no hesitation in highly recommending the 8 week MBCT course {equivalent to the 3 day intensive}... I think everyone should do it! Catherine Johnson, Physiotherapist Adelaide
