Mindful Parenting - Half Day Workshop for Parents
Saturday 27 June and Saturday 19 September 2009, Adelaide SA
You are the most important influence for your child. So how can you truly nourish yourself and your family in spite of competing demands for your time, effort and energy?
Mindful Parenting is a contemplative practice through which you can become more mindful of the presence of your children in your life. You will learn what it means to parent in a kind, calm and peaceful manner, while maintaining strong, clear and fair boundaries for your children. This style of parenting nurtures your child's individuality and unique gifts, giving him/her a wonderful balance of being given the space they need to develop their highest potential. You will also discover how to truly connect with your children and how living ‘mindfully’ in the present moment deepens your relationship with your children, others and yourself.
”Mindful parenting has the potential to help us see past the appearances of typical behaviors and allows us to see our children, as they truly are, beautiful and whole. If we stay in the present moment and practice mindfulness we can act with some degree of wisdom and compassion” Tracy Liebmann, Mindful Parenting Teacher.
During this half day workshop you will learn how to bring a fresh perspective to parenting, one that allows you and your children to be your true selves, without preconceptions or restrictive expectations. You will learn how to create a space for your family to thrive and communicate. You will also learn how to:
- Relate to your child with loving kindness
- Disengage from conflict when it happens
- Respond to your child’s behavior with more insight and awareness.
Mindful Parenting differs from many parenting approaches which focus on changing a child's behaviour, using techniques that involve time out and creating artificial consequences for the child. The overall approach being presented in this workshop is a therapeutic approach for both adult and child, where the adult learns to stay in their adult role, rather than reacting automatically to the emotion of the situation or behavior, and focuses on resolving conflicts in a way that meets both the needs of the parent and the child. This approach actively affirms your experience (and at times your 'struggle') on your journey as a parent, and creates a space for you to develop a kinder relationship with yourself and your child built on non-judgment and acceptance of the challenges and joys that accompany your journey as a parent.
“Mindful parenting is about learning to experience family life fully, as it unfolds - moment by moment.” Myla Kabat Zinn, Author of Everyday Blessings
This is an invitation for you to wake up to the fullness of your life with your children, and to transform your moments of despair and struggle to those of peace and joy.
The course is facilitated by Fiona Glover (BA, BSW, M. Mental Health Sc) an accredited mental health social worker, meditator, and mother, with over 12 years experience in the field of mental health, and over 5 years experience running MBCT courses.
